Research shows links between farm worker welfare and animal welfare, with working conditions, training and staff wellbeing affecting the quality of animal care in agricultural settings.
The welfare of farm animals and the welfare of people who care for them are more connected than is commonly recognized. Farm work is physically demanding, often poorly paid, socially isolating, and psychologically stressful — particularly in slaughter operations. Workers experiencing burnout or moral distress are less able to provide high-quality, attentive animal care. Conversely, farmers and farm workers who find meaning in their animal care show better welfare outcomes for the animals they tend. Addressing the systemic undervaluation of farm work — through better pay, training, and support — is therefore also an animal welfare intervention.
