Reptiles have complex thermal, UV and behavioral needs that are frequently misunderstood by owners, leading to chronic welfare failures that may cause years of suffering.
Reptile welfare failure is largely invisible — reptiles hide illness, do not vocalize pain, and can appear normal while suffering from chronic metabolic disease. Metabolic bone disease from inadequate UVB lighting causes weeks to months of progressive bone softening and fracture before becoming clinically obvious. Gout from dehydration causes joint deposits that create severe chronic pain. These conditions are almost entirely preventable with appropriate husbandry — proper UV equipment, correct temperature gradients, appropriate diet and humidity. The challenge is that the information required for correct reptile keeping is not communicated effectively at point of sale, leaving millions of animals in slow decline from preventable conditions.
