Water access seems like a basic welfare requirement that would rarely fail — yet water restriction and inadequate trough provision remain common welfare problems in commercial livestock systems. In group-housed cattle, dominant animals may monopolize troughs, leaving subordinate animals with restricted access. Equipment failures in poultry systems can rapidly cause dehydration deaths. Water quality problems including algal growth, chemical contamination and high sediment reduce palatability and intake. Welfare monitoring that specifically checks water access for all animals in a group — not just the presence of functioning troughs — would identify many hidden welfare problems. This simple welfare input has profound effects on health, behavior and overall welfare.
