Polled breeding represents the ideal solution to dehorning welfare: eliminating the problem at source rather than trying to minimize harm during an inherently painful procedure. The genetic technology is available and improving. High-producing polled dairy lines have been developed. The economic argument is increasingly clear — no dehorning costs, potential welfare premium in marketplace, positive welfare labeling. The barriers are primarily inertia and the multi-generation timescale of breed transition. But the pace of genomic selection in modern cattle breeding means a serious commitment to polled breeding within major dairy breeds could substantially reduce dehorning within a decade.
