Each affected dog experiences chronic pain that, depending on condition, begins in puppyhood and continues throughout life. Breeding reform — away from exaggerated physical traits and toward health-tested breeding — is the only solution, but requires both regulatory change and consumer willingness to prioritize health over appearance.
