Adequate clean water access is essential for pig welfare and productivity, but water restriction, poor quality and equipment failures create welfare problems in commercial pig systems.
Water access in pig farming may seem like a simple welfare requirement, but research consistently finds inadequate water provision as a welfare problem in commercial systems. Nipple drinker flow rates too low for the number of pigs using them create competitive access problems — dominant pigs secure adequate water while subordinate animals go thirsty. Water quality problems including high mineral content or contamination reduce intake below physiological requirements. The welfare consequences of water restriction are rapid and severe — dehydration stress occurs within hours and manifests as increased stereotypies, aggression and reduced welfare across the affected group.
