Turkeys have complex behavioral needs including foraging, dustbathing, perching and social interaction that are poorly met in conventional commercial systems.
Turkey welfare lags behind even chicken welfare in terms of research, standards and public attention. These are large, cognitively capable birds with strong behavioral motivations — foraging, perching, social interaction — that commercial production systems deny. Pecking-related injuries and cannibalism are endemic precisely because these birds are kept in barren conditions that frustrate their behavioral drives. The response of beak trimming addresses symptoms while leaving the cause untreated. Better enrichment, lower stocking densities, and systems designed around turkey behavioral biology could substantially improve welfare for the millions of turkeys farmed for Christmas and year-round consumption.
