Fish slaughter methods vary enormously in their welfare implications, with some causing prolonged suffering while increasingly available alternatives achieve rapid unconsciousness.
Fish slaughter welfare is one of the most significant and most overlooked welfare challenges in food production. Trillions of fish are killed annually with almost no consideration of the suffering involved in their deaths. Suffocation — the default method for most wild-caught and many farmed fish — causes prolonged distress as fish struggle for oxygen over many minutes. Effective alternatives exist: percussive stunning for salmonids, electrical stunning for some species, and rapid icing at very low temperatures for smaller fish. The challenge is scaling these methods to commercial production volumes while maintaining practicality. Investment in humane slaughter equipment, combined with welfare requirements in certification, can make rapid, welfare-positive fish killing commercially standard.
