Welfare Considerations

Urban geese, particularly Canada geese, have been enormously successful colonizers of parks, lakes and urban green spaces. Their success has created conflicts with users of these spaces, who object to droppings, noise and territorial behavior. Management responses including egg addling (preventing hatching), habitat modification and deterrence require welfare consideration — adult geese show stress responses to repeated harassment, and egg addling during incubation interrupts brooding behavior. The inappropriate feeding of bread to geese causes the same nutritional disease in urban geese as in urban ducks. Better public education about appropriate goose interactions reduces both welfare harm and human-goose conflict.

Never feed urban geese bread — provide appropriate greens or specialist waterfowl food in small quantities
Keep dogs under control near geese with goslings — attacks on goslings cause genuine welfare harm
Advocate for welfare-conscious urban goose management that uses habitat modification rather than repeated harassment
