Lameness represents the single largest source of chronic pain across UK farm animal populations. The aggregate welfare burden of 25% dairy cow lameness, millions of lame sheep and significant pig lameness simultaneously at any point in time is difficult to comprehend. Each lame animal experiences continuous pain — during movement, while competing for food and during rest. Despite lameness being substantially preventable through housing improvements, genetic selection and management, it remains endemic because the investment required for prevention exceeds short-term economic returns in many farming systems. Welfare certification that requires lameness monitoring and improvement targets creates accountability that market forces alone cannot provide.
