But trade deals that allow lower-welfare imports undermine the economic viability of higher-welfare UK production. The Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill included significant reforms but has stalled. The consultation processes for specific welfare improvements — farrowing crates, surgical castration — have been positive but implementation timelines are slow. Sustaining political pressure through advocacy organizations, engaged farming communities and informed consumers is essential to converting policy aspiration into regulatory reality.
