Evidence-based resources for animal welfare
Cryptococcosis is a serious fungal infection in cats primarily affecting the nose and nervous system. This guide covers welfare impacts and treatment.
Welfare-centred management of cryptococcosis requires prolonged antifungal therapy and regular monitoring. Fluconazole is the most commonly used first-line treatment with good CNS penetration. Treatment duration is typically 6-12 months or longer with response confirmed by antigen testing. Surgical debulking of large nasal masses improves treatment access. CNS disease has a poor prognosis despite treatment. Monitoring includes regular antigen titre measurement and clinical assessment.
