Feline Chronic Kidney Disease Welfare: Long-term Management

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the most common disease of senior cats, affecting over 30% of cats over 15 years. Welfare-focused management can provide years of good quality of life.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cats with well-managed CKD can maintain good quality of life for years. The welfare priority is preventing the complications of CKD — hypertension, anaemia, uraemia and hyperphosphataemia — rather than simply treating the disease. Owner-administered subcutaneous fluids improve hydration status and reduce uraemic symptoms substantially. The welfare goal is maintaining a cat in a comfortable, engaged state rather than maximising survival time at the cost of quality of life.
