Dermatophytosis (ringworm) is a highly contagious fungal infection in cats with significant welfare implications in shelter settings and homes with multiple cats.
Shelter ringworm outbreaks cause significant welfare problems through prolonged quarantine, treatment stress from repeated antifungal baths, and the distress of social isolation during treatment. Kittens in treatment programmes may miss critical socialisation windows, affecting their long-term welfare and adoptability. Evidence-based treatment protocols combining systemic itraconazole with lime sulfur dips or enilconazole sprays are most effective at limiting outbreak duration and individual treatment burden.
