FATE is the most common thromboembolic complication of feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

Survival rates with intensive treatment are around 30-40% but quality of life varies considerably

Welfare Considerations

FATE causes acute severe pain from ischaemia, paralysis and profound distress. Immediate welfare priorities include aggressive pain management with opioids, warm but not hot support for ischaemic limbs, anti-thrombotic therapy, and heart failure management. Prognosis and recurrence risk require honest discussion with owners about quality of life and euthanasia as a welfare-positive option in severe cases.

Screen cats of predisposed breeds (Maine Coon, Ragdoll, British Shorthair) for HCM with echocardiography
Seek emergency veterinary care immediately for any cat showing sudden hindlimb paralysis
Ensure aggressive pain management is provided immediately on presentation
Discuss long-term anticoagulant therapy to reduce recurrence risk in survivors
