Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) causes recurrent episodes of severe lower urinary tract pain in cats, with stress as the primary driver and environmental modification as the key welfare intervention.
FIC causes episodes of acute lower urinary tract pain characterised by straining, haematuria, and repeated visits to the litter tray. The psychological distress experienced during episodes is significant. Stress reduction and environmental enrichment are the most evidence-based welfare interventions — providing cats with control over their environment, multiple resources, and outlets for natural behaviour reduces episode frequency and severity. Nutritional modification to increase water intake and urinary analgesics for acute episodes support welfare management. Addressing the root cause — chronic stress — is the most welfare-positive long-term approach.
