Litter tray management is one of the most significant welfare factors for indoor cats, with inadequate provision causing urinary problems, stress-related disease, and significant quality of life reduction.

Welfare Considerations

Inappropriate litter tray provision causes cats to soil outside the tray, which creates stress in both cat and owner, and often leads to veterinary problems. Cats avoiding dirty or poorly positioned trays may retain urine, predisposing to urinary tract disease. Feline lower urinary tract disease including cystitis is painful and closely linked to stress including litter tray problems. Good litter management is preventive veterinary care.
