Cats that would previously have experienced a rapidly progressive, fatal illness can now achieve sustained remission with appropriate treatment. However, treatment access remains a welfare concern - costs can be significant, and awareness among cat owners and some vets remains limited. Early diagnosis substantially improves treatment response, making owner awareness of FIP signs critical. The welfare obligation now extends to ensuring that affected cats have access to effective treatment, which requires both improved diagnostic capability and affordable access to antivirals.
