Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) was historically a uniformly fatal disease, but antiviral treatments now offer hope for many affected cats.
FIP caused immense suffering and grief — previously, diagnosis was effectively a death sentence. The emergence of antiviral treatments has transformed welfare outcomes for many affected cats. However, treatment access remains expensive and unevenly available globally. Welfare during treatment requires careful monitoring and supportive care. Some forms, particularly neurological FIP, remain harder to treat. Early diagnosis and rapid initiation of treatment are critical to outcome.
