Play is a critical welfare need for indoor cats that meets predatory motivation, provides exercise, and reduces frustration-driven behavioural problems.
Frustration of predatory motivation is a significant welfare problem for many indoor cats. Without appropriate outlets, the drive to hunt finds expression in redirected aggression to owners, play aggression to other household members, and destructive activity. Cats left without stimulation for extended periods become lethargic and may develop obesity and associated health problems. The welfare solution is not to suppress predatory motivation — which is impossible — but to provide appropriate outlets through regular interactive play with toys that simulate prey movement, and environmental enrichment including puzzle feeders, hiding places, and elevated perches. Play also strengthens the human-cat bond and provides social interaction.
