Pyothorax — bacterial infection of the pleural space — is a serious welfare emergency in cats that requires aggressive treatment but carries a favourable prognosis with appropriate management.

Welfare Considerations

Pyothorax welfare management spans two phases: the acute emergency phase (respiratory stabilisation through chest drainage and antibiotics) and the prolonged recovery phase with indwelling chest tubes. The acute phase is extremely distressing — cats in respiratory failure from thoracic pus require immediate intervention. Recovery with chest tubes in place requires careful nursing, regular lavage and monitoring for complications. The favourable prognosis justifies aggressive treatment in most cases, but welfare assessment must be continuous during the tube-in period.
