Urethral obstruction is a life-threatening emergency predominantly affecting male cats, causing inability to urinate and rapid deterioration that requires emergency veterinary intervention within hours.
Urethral obstruction causes extreme discomfort and pain from bladder distension and renal failure. Affected cats cry in pain, strain repeatedly at the litter tray, and rapidly become systemically ill from uraemia. The condition is a genuine emergency; delays in treatment cause irreversible kidney damage and death. Following relief of obstruction, ongoing management including appropriate diet, hydration, and management of underlying interstitial cystitis reduces recurrence risk. Owners who recognise early signs of straining seek treatment before the condition becomes critical.
