Urethral obstruction in male cats is a life-threatening emergency causing extreme pain and rapid deterioration requiring immediate veterinary treatment.
Male cats with urethral obstruction experience intense pain from bladder distension and progressive uraemic toxicity. Without emergency treatment, obstruction is fatal within 24-48 hours. The pain and toxaemia caused by obstruction represent extreme welfare suffering that requires immediate intervention. After relief of obstruction, supportive care prevents rebound complications. Recurrent obstruction in some cats may warrant perineal urethrostomy that permanently widens the urethra, preventing future obstruction and the associated welfare emergency. Dietary management reducing urinary crystal formation prevents initial obstruction development.
