Feline Urinary Obstruction: Emergency Welfare Management

Urinary obstruction in male cats is a life-threatening emergency causing acute suffering and requires immediate veterinary intervention to prevent death.

Welfare Considerations

Urinary obstruction causes acute severe pain, bladder distension and systemic deterioration from uraemia within 24-48 hours. Affected cats show straining, vocalising and collapse. Welfare priorities include emergency deobstruction under anaesthesia, urinary catheterisation, IV fluid therapy, pain relief, and addressing underlying causes through dietary modification and management changes to reduce recurrence.

Seek emergency veterinary care immediately for any male cat straining to urinate without producing urine
Implement dietary modification with a urinary diet after any episode of obstruction
Increase water intake through wet food, water fountains and multiple water sources
Discuss perineal urethrostomy with your vet if obstruction recurs despite management changes
