Evidence-based resources for animal welfare
Managing the interplay between hyperthyroidism and kidney disease in cats is one of the most challenging aspects of feline medicine.
The hyperthyroidism-renal disease interplay requires a personalised welfare approach for each cat. A trial of methimazole (3-4 weeks) allows renal function assessment before committing to permanent treatment. Cats whose renal function significantly declines during medical management may benefit from only partial thyroid control. Cats with mild CKD may still benefit from radioiodine. Regular monitoring of both thyroid and renal function guides ongoing management in this complex clinical scenario.
