Anal gland impaction and infection is a common painful condition in dogs, significantly welfare-improved through dietary management and regular expression in susceptible breeds.
Dogs with anal gland impaction experience discomfort from distended, inflamed glands causing the characteristic scooting behaviour. Anal gland abscesses cause severe localised pain, inflammation, and systemic infection requiring urgent veterinary treatment. Chronically recurring anal gland problems cause repeated welfare impacts. Dietary management with increased fibre content is often effective at preventing recurrence by promoting natural gland expression during defaecation. Prophylactic regular gland expression every 4-6 weeks in susceptible dogs prevents the progression to painful impaction.
