Understanding the welfare considerations around euthanasia for severe behaviour problems.
Behavioural euthanasia is one of the most difficult welfare decisions in companion animal practice. Welfare ethics require assessing quality of life for the animal alongside safety risk to others. Where aggressive behaviour has a treatable underlying cause, euthanasia before appropriate management is a welfare failure. Where behaviours are severe, untreatable, and quality of life is poor, euthanasia may be the most compassionate option.
