Welfare Considerations

GDV is one of the most dramatic acute welfare emergencies in dogs. Affected dogs experience severe abdominal pain, unproductive retching, and rapid cardiovascular collapse as the twisted stomach occludes blood supply. Emergency derotation and surgical gastropexy is the only effective treatment. Prophylactic laparoscopic gastropexy in predisposed breeds at the time of neutering prevents the twist and can be life-saving. Feeding from raised bowls, avoiding exercise after meals, and feeding smaller meals reduce triggering risk.
