Dogs are highly intelligent animals that suffer from boredom and under-stimulation — cognitive enrichment through training, puzzle feeders, and novel experiences improves welfare and reduces problem behaviour.
Chronic under-stimulation causes boredom frustration in dogs, expressed as destructive behaviour, excessive vocalisation, and anxiety. Cognitive enrichment — puzzle feeders, nose work, trick training, novel environments — provides mental exercise that is as important as physical activity. Welfare assessments now explicitly include cognitive stimulation as a positive welfare indicator.
