Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is a common immune-mediated skin disease in dogs that causes facial skin lesions and requires long-term management.
DLE causes chronic skin discomfort — erosions on the nasal planum can progress to ulceration and secondary infection, causing pain and itching. Aesthetic changes to the nose are often the owner's primary concern, but welfare assessment should focus on pain and quality of life. Sunscreen application, avoiding peak UV hours and immunomodulatory therapy substantially improve welfare. Long-term management is needed as the condition rarely resolves permanently.
