Ear haematomas cause acute pain and discomfort from the pressure of accumulated blood within the ear flap. Affected dogs show head shaking, ear scratching, and reluctance to have the ear touched, indicating significant pain. The underlying ear disease that caused the haematoma is itself often painful or itchy. Without prompt treatment, the enlarging haematoma becomes increasingly uncomfortable and may interfere with hearing. Poorly managed chronic ear disease that leads to recurrent haematomas causes prolonged welfare compromise from ongoing pain and infection.
