Epilepsy causes recurrent seizures in dogs with significant welfare impact. Modern antiepileptic drug combinations achieve good seizure control in most cases.
Epileptic dogs experience significant welfare impact during and after seizures. The post-ictal period of confusion, anxiety, and temporary blindness can last several hours and causes distress for both dog and owner. Good seizure control with antiepileptic medication reduces seizure frequency but may not eliminate seizures entirely. Monitoring seizure frequency, recognising triggers, and having emergency medication available for cluster seizures substantially improves welfare management. Dogs with well-controlled epilepsy can live full, high-quality lives.
