Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke in Dogs: Prevention and Emergency Response

Heat stroke is a potentially fatal emergency in dogs. Understanding prevention and emergency response can be lifesaving. Dogs cannot cool themselves effectively in hot conditions.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Heat stroke causes severe suffering through hyperthermia, cerebral oedema, and multi-organ failure. Welfare-positive prevention includes never leaving dogs in cars, avoiding exercise in temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius, providing shade and fresh water, and recognising early signs (excessive panting, drooling, distress). Emergency cooling with cool (not cold) water and immediate veterinary attention is life-saving. Dogs that survive heat stroke face long-term organ damage requiring ongoing monitoring.
