Heat stroke is a preventable emergency that kills hundreds of dogs each year in the UK. Understanding risk factors and prevention saves lives.
Heat stroke causes extreme suffering and rapid death in dogs. The condition progresses from panting and distress through collapse to multi-organ failure within minutes. Even with emergency veterinary treatment, many dogs die or suffer permanent organ damage. Prevention is entirely achievable: never leaving dogs in hot cars, exercising only in cool early mornings or evenings, ensuring constant access to water and shade, and recognising that flat-faced breeds are never safe in warm conditions even when stationary.
