Heatstroke is a life-threatening and completely preventable welfare emergency in dogs, with rising incidence linked to climate warming and owner unawareness of breed and individual risk factors.
Heatstroke causes extreme suffering through hyperthermia, respiratory distress, neurological dysfunction, and multi-organ failure. Dogs in cars parked in sunlight reach lethal temperatures within 10-15 minutes even with windows cracked. Exercise-induced heatstroke occurs commonly during warm weather walks, particularly in brachycephalic dogs and elderly or obese individuals. Survivors may have permanent kidney, neurological, or cardiac damage. Prevention is entirely within owner control and requires awareness of risk factors and environmental conditions.
