Welfare Considerations

Welfare in hydrocephalic dogs depends heavily on disease severity and progression rate. Mild, stable cases may have minimal impact on quality of life; progressive cases develop seizures, visual deficits, cognitive decline and chronic head pain from raised intracranial pressure. Welfare assessment must be ongoing — disease often progresses slowly and welfare deterioration is incremental. Medical management with omeprazole and dexamethasone reduces CSF production and can stabilise mild-to-moderate cases effectively.
