Immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) is a severe and potentially fatal condition in which the immune system destroys the dog's own red blood cells.
IMHA causes acute, life-threatening illness with severe welfare implications — profound anaemia causes weakness, breathlessness and distress. Hospitalisation for intensive monitoring and treatment is essential but itself stressful. Dogs that survive the acute phase require long-term immunosuppression with associated side effects. The condition is unpredictable and relapses can occur despite remission. Early presentation to a veterinary emergency service is critical to survival.
