Welfare Considerations

Lick granuloma imposes a compound welfare burden — physical pain from the wound itself, and the psychological distress of an underlying anxiety or compulsive disorder driving the behaviour. Physical barrier prevention (bandaging, Elizabethan collar) without addressing the underlying behavioural and anxiety drivers is ineffective and adds welfare costs through restraint stress. Multimodal treatment combining behavioural modification, anxiolytic medication, physical wound management and investigation of underlying orthopaedic or neuropathic pain achieves the best welfare outcomes.
