Otitis externa and media are common and painful conditions in dogs, particularly in predisposed breeds, requiring systematic management of underlying causes for sustained welfare improvement.
Chronic ear disease causes constant discomfort from inflammation, infection, and pruritus. Dogs with otitis may shake their heads hundreds of times daily, develop haematomas from ear-flap trauma, and show pain responses when ears are touched. The chronic nature of recurrent otitis means affected dogs may spend years in varying degrees of ear discomfort. Many cases are managed symptomatically without addressing underlying causes, leading to repeated cycles of infection and treatment. Systematic investigation and management of primary causes, particularly allergic disease, provides better long-term welfare outcomes.
