Canine parvovirus causes severe haemorrhagic gastroenteritis with extremely high mortality in unvaccinated dogs, but is entirely preventable through routine vaccination.
Dogs with parvovirus experience severe and prolonged suffering: profuse vomiting and bloody diarrhoea causing rapid dehydration, septicaemia from gut bacteria entering the bloodstream, and extreme debilitation. Intensive veterinary care including intravenous fluids and antibiotics is required for survival. Even treated puppies suffer significantly over 3-7 days of critical illness. The disease is entirely preventable through vaccination, making each unvaccinated dog's death from parvovirus a preventable welfare failure.
