Prostate disease is common in entire male dogs over 5 years of age. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, and prostatic cysts all cause welfare impacts that are largely preventable through neutering.
BPH causes chronic discomfort from prostatic enlargement pressing on the rectum and urethra. Straining to defecate is a significant welfare indicator — affected dogs may spend prolonged periods attempting defecation with significant visible effort and discomfort. Prostatitis causes acute systemic illness with fever and abdominal pain. Deslorelin implants (Suprelorin) provide temporary testosterone suppression as an alternative to surgical castration in dogs where anaesthesia carries risk. Welfare-positive management requires prompt recognition and treatment.
