Pyometra, a severe uterine infection, is a common and life-threatening emergency in entire female dogs. Neutering prevents this preventable welfare emergency.
Pyometra causes severe systemic illness — affected dogs show profound depression, inappetence, polydipsia, and rapid deterioration to septic shock without treatment. Closed pyometra cases may present collapsed rather than showing gradual deterioration, making owner recognition difficult. Emergency surgical costs are substantial. Welfare-positive prevention through neutering eliminates this risk entirely. Prostaglandin medical management is an option for valuable breeding bitches but carries higher mortality risk than surgery.
