Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is among the most common conditions affecting older dogs. Welfare-centred management extends quality life expectancy through staged intervention.
CKD welfare management prioritises quality over quantity of life — dogs with advanced CKD experience uraemic nausea, inappetence, and lethargy that significantly reduces wellbeing. Early-stage CKD is largely asymptomatic, making regular screening for at-risk breeds important. Welfare-positive management includes renal diet, phosphate binders, anti-nausea medication, antihypertensives, and subcutaneous fluid therapy. Proactive euthanasia planning should be part of CKD management conversations before crises develop.
