Thunderstorm phobia is a common and distressing anxiety disorder in dogs, often underestimated by owners and underdiagnosed by vets.
Thunderstorm phobia causes intense acute suffering during storm events and can lead to chronic anxiety as storm season approaches. Dogs with severe phobia experience significant welfare compromise for months of the year and are at risk of self-injury during escape attempts. Owner responses - including excessive reassurance or punishment - can inadvertently worsen the condition. Effective management requires owner education, environmental modifications such as safe hiding spaces, desensitisation protocols, and in severe cases veterinary prescription of anxiolytic medication.
