Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in dogs, particularly females, and cause significant discomfort. Correct diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic stewardship protects both individual and population welfare.
UTIs cause genuine discomfort — dogs with active infections show dysuria (painful urination), reduced activity, and behavioural changes indicating pain. Treatment without culture risks selecting resistant bacteria and treatment failure. Welfare-positive management includes urine culture before treatment, completing the full antibiotic course, and investigating recurrent UTIs for underlying causes rather than repeated short courses. Chronic untreated UTIs can ascend to cause pyelonephritis (kidney infection) with serious welfare impacts.
