Struvite bladder stones are the most common urinary stones in dogs, causing painful lower urinary tract disease that is highly amenable to dietary management.
Struvite urolithiasis causes lower urinary tract welfare impairment including frequent painful urination, haematuria, difficulty voiding and — in severe cases — urethral obstruction that is a life-threatening welfare emergency. The welfare response to struvite stones requires simultaneous attention to pain management, antibiotic treatment of the underlying UTI and dietary dissolution. Dogs with urethral obstruction require emergency catheterisation before any other treatment can be effective. Recurrence prevention through long-term dietary modification and UTI surveillance significantly reduces chronic welfare burden.
