Acute Vestibular Disease in Dogs: Welfare and Recovery

Acute vestibular disease causes sudden, severe symptoms that are distressing for dogs and owners, but typically resolves well with appropriate supportive care.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dogs experiencing acute vestibular episodes are acutely distressed — the sudden loss of balance, inability to stand and continuous vertigo cause significant suffering. The episode itself is frightening for both dog and owner. Anti-nausea medication substantially improves welfare during the acute phase. Most dogs recover well, but the initial 24-72 hours require careful nursing support — preventing injury from falling, providing anti-emetics, and ensuring hydration. Prognosis is generally excellent for idiopathic cases.
