Idiopathic vestibular syndrome is a common and frightening condition in older dogs that causes sudden loss of balance and disorientation.
Dogs experiencing vestibular episodes are acutely distressed and disoriented. The sudden onset is alarming for both dog and owner. Nausea and vomiting cause additional discomfort. During recovery, dogs may be unable to eat or drink independently and require careful nursing. Most dogs make a good recovery within one to two weeks, though a residual head tilt may persist permanently. Calm handling, anti-nausea medication, and supportive care improve welfare during the acute phase. Distinguishing idiopathic vestibular disease from stroke requires veterinary examination.
