A welfare guide to elbow osteochondrosis (OCD) and elbow dysplasia in dogs, common developmental orthopedic conditions causing significant lameness in young large-breed dogs.
Elbow OCD causes severe joint pain in young dogs at the start of their lives — many affected dogs face years of chronic pain if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Any large-breed puppy showing forelimb stiffness or reluctance to exercise at 4-8 months deserves urgent veterinary assessment. Only breed from BVA-graded elbow-normal dogs to reduce the inherited prevalence of this condition.
