Evidence-based resources for animal welfare
An in-depth guide to canine food allergy, covering dietary elimination trials, allergen identification, and long-term welfare management.
Welfare-centred food allergy management requires a rigorous 8-12 week elimination dietary trial using a single novel protein source the dog has never eaten, or a hydrolysed protein diet. During the trial, absolutely no treats, flavoured medications, or table scraps can be given. Provocation testing after improvement confirms the diagnosis. Allergen-specific immunotherapy is being investigated but is not yet established for food allergy in dogs. Lifelong diet management with regular welfare monitoring maintains good quality of life.
